Gluten-Free Tortillas: Soft, Homemade Recipes & Buying Guide

Introducing an easy-to-make, 3-ingredient gluten-free and vegan tortilla that’s perfect for Mexican nights at home.

These homemade tortillas are not only simple and quick to prepare, they’re also incredibly budget-friendly — roughly 30p for 8 tortillas (about 4p each), compared with around £3 for 6 in shops.

Why you’ll love these tortillas:

  • Fast and easy
  • Flexible and foldable
  • Only 3 ingredients
  • About 4p each
  • Ready in under 15 minutes
  • Gluten-free and vegan

They use one main ingredient you can find in any supermarket — you’ll already have water and a pinch of salt at home.

Ingredients

These tortillas are surprisingly quick to make. The batter comes together in minutes and you fry small rounds until lightly golden.

Gluten free batter

Tip for thinner tortillas: after pouring the batter into the hot pan, use the back of a spoon to smooth the top and spread the mixture slightly to create a thinner, more even tortilla.

The finished tortillas are soft and flexible, ideal for folding around your favorite fillings.

Gluten Free Tortillas Folding

These are about 4–5 inches in diameter, but you can make them larger if you prefer.

Gluten Free Tortillas

You can fill them with whatever you like. One simple filling I made:

  1. Fry a diced red onion in olive oil.
  2. Add spices of your choice, sliced pepper and the juice of one lime; fry for about 5 minutes.
  3. Serve inside the warm tortillas with salsa and avocado.

Gluten Free Tortillas

Super easy homemade 3-ingredient gluten-free & vegan tortillas.
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 12 minutes
Servings: 8 tortillas

Ingredients

  • 150 g gram flour (chickpea flour / besan)
  • 200 ml water
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Sieve the gram flour into a large bowl to remove lumps and add a generous pinch of salt.
  2. Slowly whisk in the water until a smooth batter forms.
  3. Heat a pan with a little oil. Once hot, pour a small amount of batter into the pan from a height to help keep a round shape.
  4. Use the back of a spoon to smooth the batter and make the tortilla thinner if desired.
  5. Fry each side for about 30 seconds until lightly golden. Repeat until all the batter is used.

Notes

The filling recipe mentioned above (onion, peppers, spices, lime, salsa, avocado) pairs perfectly with these tortillas.
