Beyond its core appeal, the versatility of this fresh salad is unparalleled. You’re encouraged to customize it to your heart’s content! Don’t have a specific vegetable on hand? No problem! Swap it out for whatever fresh produce you have in your fridge. This flexibility ensures you can enjoy a delicious, fresh meal anytime, adapting to your ingredients and cravings.

The Heart of the Salad: Key Ingredients

Crafting a truly memorable prawn salad begins with selecting the freshest, most vibrant ingredients. Each component plays a vital role in creating the perfect balance of flavor, texture, and nutrition.

Ingredients laid out to make Prawn Salad including prawns, lettuce, avocado, tomatoes, red onion, and mixed seeds.
Fresh, colorful ingredients are key to a delicious prawn salad.
  1. Large Prawns (Shrimp): These form the protein-rich core of our salad. Always ensure they are peeled and deveined for the best experience. You can opt for fresh prawns or use frozen ones; simply thaw them in lukewarm water for about 10 minutes before cooking. Look for firm, translucent prawns with a fresh, oceanic smell.
  2. Romaine Lettuce: This crisp, crunchy lettuce provides a fantastic base for the salad, offering a refreshing counterpoint to the richer ingredients. Its sturdy leaves hold up well to dressing.
  3. Rocket (Arugula): Adding a peppery, slightly bitter note, rocket introduces a lovely depth of flavor and a delicate texture that beautifully contrasts with the romaine.
  4. Avocado: The star alongside the prawns, avocado delivers a luxurious creaminess and a boost of healthy monounsaturated fats. Choose one that yields slightly to gentle pressure when ripe.
  5. Red Onion: For those who appreciate a bit of a pungent bite and a splash of color, thinly sliced red onion is a wonderful addition. It’s entirely optional if you prefer a milder flavor profile.
  6. Medium Tomatoes: Whether cherry tomatoes halved or larger varieties diced, tomatoes contribute a burst of bright, sweet-tart flavor and essential juiciness to the salad.
  7. Mixed Seeds: While optional, a sprinkle of mixed seeds (like pumpkin, sunflower, or chia) offers an excellent crunch, extra visual appeal, and a dose of healthy fats and fiber.
  8. Maple Dijon Dressing: This avocado and prawn salad is perfectly elevated by my signature Maple Dijon Dressing. Its sweet, tangy, and slightly savory profile ties all the ingredients together harmoniously. This versatile dressing also shines in my Smoked Salmon Salad.

Customizing Your Prawn Salad: Substitutions & Variations

The true joy of a salad often lies in its flexibility. This prawn salad recipe is wonderfully adaptable, allowing you to tailor it to your dietary needs, preferences, or what you simply have on hand. Feel free to experiment and make it your own!

Protein Alternatives

  • Beyond Prawns: If you’re not in the mood for shrimp or prefer another protein, this salad welcomes alternatives with open arms. Consider grilled chicken breast, thinly sliced steak, crispy pan-fried tofu, or even chickpeas for a plant-based boost. You could also serve it atop a bed of quinoa or lentils for a hearty vegetarian version rich in protein.

Vegetable & Fruit Swaps

  • Seasonal Bounty: This salad is a canvas for a variety of fresh produce. Enhance its flavor and texture with seasonal additions like sweet mango for a tropical twist, crisp cucumber slices, peppery radishes, or even vibrant bell peppers. A squeeze of fresh lime juice over the finished salad can also brighten all the flavors.
  • Herbs: Fresh herbs like cilantro, parsley, or dill can add an aromatic depth.

Dressing Adventures

  • Dressings to Dazzle: While our Maple Dijon Dressing is a favorite for this prawn salad, the world of dressings is vast! Explore different flavor profiles:
    • Zesty & Light: A simple lime dressing made with fresh lime juice, lime zest, and extra virgin olive oil offers a bright, refreshing option.
    • Creamy Indulgence: A Greek yogurt-based dressing with fresh herbs can add a rich, tangy creaminess.
    • Asian Fusion: For a different culinary journey, try a dressing with soy sauce, a hint of sesame oil, and garlic powder for an umami-rich experience. My Peanut Salad Dressing would also be a fantastic choice for an Asian-inspired take.
    • Spicy Kick: A sweet chili sauce can replace the Maple Dijon for an instant heat boost.

Spice it Up!

  • Heat Seekers Rejoice: For those who love a bit of heat, easily transform this into a spicy shrimp salad. Add extra chili flakes to your chosen dressing, a dash of hot sauce, or finely minced fresh chilies directly into the salad. A spicy lime vinaigrette can also elevate the whole dish.

Make it Deluxe

  • Elevate Your Experience: To truly make this dish a showstopper, opt for large, juicy king prawns. Enhance the salad further with gourmet touches like toasted pine nuts, crumbled feta cheese, or a sprinkle of fresh dill. If you’re entertaining, this elegant salad pairs beautifully with other vibrant dishes such as an amazing Courgette Salad, a hearty Egg-Free Quiche, or a wholesome Three Bean Salad.

Kid-Friendly Adaptations

  • Little Eaters Love It Too: If you’re serving younger family members who might be picky, feel free to adapt the recipe. Swap prawns for smaller, more familiar proteins like cooked chicken breast, or simply adjust the vegetables to their preferences. Smaller chopped pieces of ingredients often make the salad more approachable for kids.

How to Make Prawn Salad Step-by-Step

Creating this delicious prawn and avocado salad is a straightforward process, designed for maximum flavor with minimal effort. Follow these simple steps to bring your fresh salad to life:

Frying prawns in a pan until pink.
Step 1: Cook the Prawns. Heat a pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Add a splash of olive oil, then add your peeled and deveined prawns. Cook for just 2 minutes on each side, or until they turn a beautiful opaque pink and are thoroughly cooked through. Be careful not to overcook them, as they can become rubbery. Remove them from the heat and set them aside to cool slightly while you prepare the other ingredients.
Maple Dijon Salad Dressing in a glass jar, ready to be shaken.
Step 2: Prepare the Dressing. In a small jar with a tight-fitting lid or a small bowl, combine all the ingredients for your chosen salad dressing (like our Maple Dijon Dressing). Shake or whisk vigorously until all ingredients are well combined and the dressing is emulsified.
Romaine lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and red onion on a cutting board, prepped for the salad.
Step 3: Chop the Vegetables. Get your fresh vegetables ready. Roughly slice the romaine lettuce, chop the medium tomatoes into quarters (or smaller if preferred), peel and roughly chop the ripe avocado, and thinly slice the red onion. Preparing these ensures a consistent texture throughout the salad.
Combining all the salad ingredients in a large bowl, including greens, prawns, and dressing.
Step 4: Combine and Toss. In a large mixing bowl, combine all the chopped vegetables, along with the rocket/arugula, the slightly cooled prawns, your prepared salad dressing, and the optional mixed seeds. Gently toss everything together until all the ingredients are evenly coated with the dressing. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Hint: Remember, this salad is incredibly versatile! Don’t let the absence of one or two ingredients deter you. Feel free to substitute with what you have on hand, or get creative with complementary flavors!

Expert Tips for the Perfect Prawn Salad

  • Don’t Overcook Prawns: Prawns cook very quickly. Overcooking them will make them tough and rubbery. Two minutes per side is usually perfect for medium to large prawns.
  • Choose Ripe Avocado: A perfectly ripe avocado will add the best creamy texture. It should yield gently to pressure but not feel mushy.
  • Dress Just Before Serving: To prevent the lettuce from becoming soggy and the avocado from browning too quickly, it’s always best to add the dressing and combine the salad ingredients right before you plan to serve it.
  • Consider Grilling: For an extra layer of smoky flavor, try grilling your shrimp instead of pan-frying them. This is especially delicious for a summer BBQ prawn salad.
  • Chill Your Salad: While quick to assemble, a slightly chilled salad can be even more refreshing, especially on a hot day. You can prep components ahead and chill them.
  • Taste and Adjust: Always taste your dressing before adding it to the salad, and then taste the dressed salad. Adjust seasonings like salt, pepper, or a squeeze of lemon/lime juice as needed.

Storage & Leftovers

This prawn salad is best enjoyed fresh, but leftovers can be stored. If you anticipate having leftovers, it’s highly recommended to store the salad components and the dressing separately. This approach helps maintain the freshness and crispness of the vegetables.

When stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, the salad (without dressing) can last for up to 3 to 4 days. The avocado, however, is prone to browning once cut and exposed to air. While it’s safe to eat when browned, its appearance and texture might be less appealing. To minimize browning, you can try tossing the avocado with a little lemon or lime juice before adding it to the salad, or simply add fresh avocado when you’re ready to eat the leftovers.

We generally do not recommend freezing this prawn salad, as the delicate textures of the fresh vegetables and the cooked prawns will likely not hold up well after thawing.

Prawn Salad FAQs

How do you cook prawns for a salad?

The easiest way to cook prawns for a salad is to pan-fry them on a skillet over medium-high heat with a little olive oil. They only take about 2 minutes per side until they turn pink and opaque. Alternatively, you can grill them for a smoky flavor or lightly boil them. Just remember to let them cool for about 5 minutes before adding them to your salad.

Can I prepare Shrimp Avocado Salad ahead of time?

Yes, with a few modifications, you can certainly prepare parts of this salad ahead. You can chop all the vegetables, except for the avocado, in advance and store them in the fridge. It’s best to add the avocado last to prevent browning. Additionally, keep the salad dressing separate and only toss it with the salad right before you’re ready to serve to maintain maximum freshness and crispness.

What are some good things to put in a prawn salad?

A shrimp salad with a base of crisp lettuce is wonderfully versatile! I highly recommend adding fresh vegetables like creamy avocado, juicy tomatoes, and thinly sliced red onion for a balanced flavor and texture. For an additional fruity kick, consider adding sweet mango or segments of grapefruit. Other great additions include crisp cucumber, bell peppers, or even a handful of toasted nuts for extra crunch.

What are the benefits of prawn salad?

Prawn salad is an excellent example of a healthy meal that is both nutritious and incredibly delicious! Prawns themselves are a fantastic source of lean protein, low in calories, and rich in essential vitamins and minerals like selenium and B12. By incorporating a variety of fresh vegetables like avocado, lettuce, and tomatoes, you’re boosting your intake of fiber, healthy fats, antioxidants, and a wide array of vitamins. Opting for a light, homemade dressing keeps the fat and sugar content in check, making it a perfectly balanced and wholesome meal.
