Weekly Loves

Welcome back to the Ramshackle Pantry! While our culinary journey often leads us down the delicious path of macaroni and cheese – a topic we truly love exploring in all its cheesy glory – today, we’re taking a brief, delightful detour. Every now and then, it’s refreshing to pause, look around, and share some of the random, intriguing, funny, or genuinely inspiring nuggets that have captured my attention throughout the week. Think of this as a weekly digest of musings, a collection of observations that add a dash of flavor to everyday life beyond the kitchen. From personal milestones to quirky internet trends and linguistic discoveries, join me as I unpack a few things that have made this week particularly memorable and, dare I say, quite entertaining.

A Shout-Out to My Incredible Wife

It’s no secret that I adore my wife every single week, but some weeks call for a special, public acknowledgment! I’m thrilled to announce a fantastic development here at Ramshackle Pantry: my wife is officially joining the team to elevate our photography game! This is truly monumental news for the blog. For those who follow our culinary adventures, you might know that food photography has always been a challenging frontier for me. While I pour my passion into crafting delicious recipes and writing engaging content, capturing those dishes with the professional visual appeal they deserve has consistently been my weakest point. Her expertise is a game-changer.

My wife, on the other hand, possesses a natural talent and a long-standing passion for photography. She’s been honing her skills for years, experimenting with different techniques, lighting, and composition. The results she’s already achieving are nothing short of spectacular. Her keen eye for detail and understanding of visual storytelling are already leveling up the aesthetic quality of our posts significantly. The vibrant colors, crisp textures, and inviting ambiance she brings to our food imagery are truly transformative. I am incredibly happy and immensely grateful to have her participating in this venture. This collaboration isn’t just about improved visuals; it’s about blending our strengths to create a more comprehensive and engaging experience for all of you. It’s a wonderful synergy of culinary creativity and visual artistry, and I couldn’t be more excited for you to see the beautiful results of her work.

Nose Hair Extensions: A Trend That Defies Expectations

Whaaaaaaaat? Yes, you read that right. Nose hair extensions are indeed a “thing” that recently surfaced on my radar, and honestly, the sheer audacity of it is both bewildering and utterly fascinating. In a world saturated with conventional beauty standards and elaborate grooming routines, this particular trend stands out as a defiant, almost rebellious, statement. Part of me, the part that delights in the wonderfully bizarre and embraces the absurd, genuinely hopes this trend takes off. Imagine the possibilities! I’d personally love to see even longer extensions being added, perhaps styled into intricate braids or flamboyant curls. The thought alone brings a smile to my face, highlighting the playful side of fashion and self-expression.

Now, to be clear, I don’t personally find nose hair extensions conventionally “attractive” in the traditional sense. However, their appeal lies not in beauty but in their profound interestingness and humorous potential. This trend brilliantly spotlights something often considered undesirable or a “problem” to be managed – particularly for middle-aged individuals, myself included, who grapple with the natural (and sometimes unruly) realities of bodily hair growth. Anything that playfully challenges our preconceived notions of what is acceptable or fashionable, especially something that might even promote the acceptance of “middle-aged-hairy-dude problems,” is absolutely A-OK in my book. If nose hair can become a statement piece, then perhaps the world is finally ready to embrace a more authentic, less polished version of beauty. Call me Vidal Sassoon for nasal follicles, or perhaps just a keen observer of the wonderfully strange ways human creativity manifests in the realm of personal adornment. It’s a delightful reminder that fashion, at its heart, can be a form of artistic expression, social commentary, or simply an amusing experiment.

Decoding “Streaky Bacon”: A Culinary Linguistic Discovery

This past week brought a delightful and somewhat humorous lesson in proper English, specifically regarding culinary terminology that I simply hadn’t encountered before. While browsing recipes on the internet, as I often do, I stumbled upon an instruction calling for “streaky bacon.” My immediate reaction was a quizzical “What the heck is streaky bacon?” The term itself conjured images of something distinctively striped, perhaps a fancy cut I was unfamiliar with, or even some exotic, artisan variety. It piqued my curiosity, prompting a quick dive into the rabbit hole of online culinary dictionaries and food forums.

What I discovered, after a little bit of diligent looking, was both amusing and enlightening: “streaky bacon” is simply what the British call… bacon. Specifically, it refers to what Americans typically recognize as standard bacon, cut from the pork belly, characterized by its distinctive alternating layers of lean meat and fat – the very “streaks” that give it its name. The realization was a genuine “aha!” moment. Suddenly, the term made perfect sense. “Streaky bacon” is bacon, plain and simple, yet it highlights the fascinating regional differences in language, even for something as universally beloved as bacon. This experience reminded me how even common foodstuffs can have entirely different monikers across the Atlantic, similar to how “chips” mean fries in the UK and crisps mean chips. It’s a small but significant detail that can make all the difference when following an international recipe.

Incidentally, speaking of bacon, did you know that I authored an entire cookbook dedicated to this magnificent ingredient? It’s titled “Fifty Shades of Bacon,” and the cover is prominently featured as the main image in this very post. It’s a labor of love, packed with creative and delicious ways to enjoy bacon beyond the breakfast plate. It makes for an excellent white elephant gift, a unique present for the foodie in your life, or simply a fun addition to your own cookbook collection, especially with the shopping season just around the corner. It’s designed to bring joy and inspiration to anyone who appreciates the savory, crispy delight that is bacon. If you’re looking for an unforgettable gift or just want to explore the diverse potential of bacon, I invite you to check it out on Amazon. You might just find your new favorite bacon-centric dish!

Winter is Here, and So Are Its Complexities

The saying “Winter is Coming!” often evokes a sense of foreboding, especially for those of us living in northern climates. More accurately for my region, winter is already here, and it seems to have arrived a tad earlier than usual this year. Initially, I confess, I actually do enjoy the very first parts of winter. There’s a certain magic to that inaugural snowfall – the sight of big, fluffy flakes drifting lazily down, creating a pristine white blanket that often melts quickly, leaving the ground merely wet and glistening. It’s a brief, picturesque phase, a gentle transition that whispers promises of cozy evenings and festive cheer. The air becomes crisp, the world quietens, and there’s a unique beauty in the muted landscape.

However, this fleeting charm quickly gives way to the more formidable realities of a true Northern Plains winter. Soon, I know, we will be enduring weeks, if not months, in the dreaded sub-zero temperature ranges. This isn’t just “cold”; it’s a profound, physically painful chill that permeates everything. Stepping outside becomes an act of strategic preparation, bundling up in layers of thermal wear, heavy coats, hats, and gloves just to brave a short walk to the mailbox. The simple act of breathing in the frigid air can sting your lungs, and exposed skin risks immediate frostbite. YUCK! I am absolutely not a fan of that part of winter. The relentless cold transforms daily life into a series of challenges, from scraping ice off car windows to navigating treacherous icy sidewalks. Basically, the weather absolutely sucks here in Fargo from the first or second week of January until at least April, sometimes even stretching into early May. It’s a long, dark, and often brutal stretch that tests the patience and resilience of even the most hardened locals.

If I had the financial means and the freedom, my ideal scenario would be to reside here in Fargo for most of the year, embracing the milder seasons, and then make a strategic escape to somewhere warm and sunny for those excruciatingly crappy months. A winter spent on a tropical beach or amidst a vibrant city bathed in sunlight sounds like an absolute dream. However, despite my deep dislike for the extreme cold, there’s one significant caveat to this hypothetical escape: I would absolutely want to make sure I am back for at least one ice fishing trip. There’s something uniquely satisfying and communal about gathering on a frozen lake, drilling a hole, and waiting for a bite, even in the biting cold. It’s a quintessential local experience, a blend of camaraderie, patience, and the thrill of the catch that I wouldn’t want to miss. I suppose I ask a lot, don’t I? A warm escape but with a guaranteed icy adventure thrown in for good measure. Perhaps it’s this love-hate relationship with winter that truly defines living in this part of the world.

To lighten the mood after that chilling discussion of winter, here’s a little dose of pure joy and companionship. Have a video of my sweet puppy dog, Kate Winslet, diligently earning her keep by putting up with my antics and generally bringing endless warmth and amusement to our home. She’s a constant source of laughter and comfort, especially when the temperatures plummet and the days feel long. Enjoy this glimpse into her delightful world!
