Simple Steps to Brownie Perfection
One of the greatest joys of this recipe is its straightforward preparation. You don’t need any fancy equipment or advanced baking skills. It all starts with a single bowl and a handful of wholesome ingredients.
1. Gather Your Ingredients
The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity. All you need to do is combine the 8 star ingredients into one spacious mixing bowl. There’s no complex layering or separate wet and dry ingredient steps, making it perfect for novice bakers and busy schedules alike. Our key ingredients include buckwheat flour for a gluten-free base, rich cacao powder for that intense chocolate flavor, pure maple syrup for natural sweetness, melted coconut oil for moisture, unsweetened almond milk for creaminess, a touch of baking powder for lift, fresh figs and crunchy pecans for texture and taste, and a pinch of salt to balance it all.

2. Mix to a Smooth, Creamy Batter
Once all your ingredients are in the bowl, it’s time to mix! Stir everything together until you achieve a smooth, creamy chocolate batter. The consistency should be luscious and inviting. This is often the hardest part – resisting the urge to eat the delicious batter straight from the bowl! If you have little helpers in the kitchen, they will absolutely love getting involved in this mixing stage, making it a fun activity for the whole family.

3. Prepare for Baking and Add Toppings
Next, simply pour your decadent chocolate batter into a baking tray lined with parchment paper. We recommend using a 10″x7″ baking tray to achieve the ideal thickness for these brownies, around 1-2cm. Once the batter is evenly spread, it’s time for the star toppings: fresh sliced figs and crunchy pecans. Gently press them into the brownie batter. Their vibrant colors and distinct textures not only add visual appeal but also enhance the overall flavor profile.
4. Get Creative with Your Toppings!
While figs and pecans are an incredible combination, this recipe is wonderfully versatile. If you’re not a fan of figs or pecans, or simply want to experiment, feel free to get creative! Consider adding:
- Other Nuts: Walnuts, almonds, or even a mix of your favorite nuts.
- Dried Fruits: Chopped dates, cranberries, or dried cherries for a different kind of sweetness.
- Chocolate Chips: Vegan chocolate chips or chunks for an extra chocolate boost.
- Spices: A sprinkle of cinnamon or a hint of orange zest can elevate the flavors beautifully.

Baking and the Gooey Factor
Pop your prepared tray into a preheated oven (180C) for about 20 minutes. Keep an eye on them, as oven temperatures can vary – if your oven runs hot, check at 15 minutes. The goal is to bake them to perfection, where the edges are set, but the center still retains a lovely, slightly gooey texture. This soft, fudgy middle is what truly elevates these brownies from good to extraordinary.
Here are a couple of close-up shots to get you drooling – notice that delicious gooeyness in the middle section of the brownie, a sign of a perfectly baked treat!

Ingredients
- 250 g buckwheat flour (roughly 2 cups)
- 50 g cacao powder (1/3rd cup)
- 1/2 cup maple syrup
- 4 tbsp coconut oil, melted
- 250 ml unsweetened almond milk
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 2 figs, sliced
- Handful pecans
- Pinch salt
Instructions
- Pre-heat your oven to 180C (350F).
- Add all the ingredients (buckwheat flour, cacao powder, maple syrup, melted coconut oil, unsweetened almond milk, baking powder, and salt) into a large mixing bowl and mix until completely smooth and well combined.
- Line a 10″x7″ baking tray with baking paper, ensuring it overhangs slightly for easy removal. Pour the brownie mix into the prepared tray, spreading it evenly. Aim for a thickness of 1-2cm.
- Now, artfully top the batter with your sliced figs and pecans, slightly pressing them into the brownie mixture.
- Place in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. If your oven tends to run hot, we recommend checking them at 15 minutes to prevent over-baking and ensure that delightful gooey center.
- Take the brownies out of the oven and allow them to cool in the tray for at least 5 minutes before carefully slicing into squares. This cooling period helps them set and makes for cleaner cuts.
